  • Style/Date: Victorian Materials: 14K yellow gold, variscite Description: 14K yellow gold brooch with twisted wire floral design and large variscite cabochon. Variscite is found in southwestern USA, and is very similar chemically to turquoise (it has no copper!) The pin exhibits "bloomed gold." This was a process in which it was dipped in acid and the alloy would disintegrate and leave behind a matt finish hi carat gold, which was desired at that time. Also called "Romanization."

On the reverse, is a 4 leaf clover under glass. A custom brooch given to a gal for courtship. Thankfully in its original box!

The bloom was created when dipped in acid and the alloy in the gold would disintegrate and just pure gold would remain. This would give the effect of ancient gold which was the desire of the day.

The bail is on a hinge and can easily be removed to wear as a pin. Measures 4 1/8"high x 2"wide. On the reverse is engraved "Rachel Lockwood . - Aged 83"  "Presented to her daughter Mary L. Pierson. Nov. 13. 1873." Possibly from a banking family in Troy, NY. or Greenwich - Stamford, CT.                  Pearl necklace not included.
